ICAP is a multi-year process that intentionally guides students and families in the exploration of career, academic and postsecondary opportunities. With the support of adults, students develop the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and skills to create their own meaningful and powerful pathways to be career and college ready. Grade level ICAP curriculum has been implemented into the DHS schedule to accommodate for time for students to be exposed to a variety of activities pertaining to college and career planning. Below is a brief description of grade level work on to support college and career readiness at DHS.
ICAP Advisory time is a daily 25 minute class, that meets during our school-wide Access time. All students are assigned to a grade-level Advisory teacher. This time is a dedicated study hall as well a graded curriculum for state-required ICAP college & career planning and social-emotional learning.
Seniors: The senior timeline is focused on helping student understand college financial planning, college admissions awareness, as well as resume development, letters of recommendation, military preparedness, or internship and work study opportunities. Students are also reminded of scholarship timelines and support, scholarship competitiveness; as well as processes for requesting transcripts, SAT scores through Naviance. Juniors: Juniors need to be taking steps to narrow down their plans and consider what is realistic based not only on their interests, but sometimes on their academic performance in high school so far as well. Through visiting with admissions representatives at the College Fair, to completing Naviance lessons including the College SuperMatch activity, taking an SAT Practice test in the fall, and understanding scholarship & academic planning for life after high school. Juniors explore the many factors of the college and career selection process and find schools that fit their particular criteria. Sophomores: Sophomores have a year of high school under their belt, so we want them taking one step farther in the process of developing a college and career plan after high school. Students will complete the Career Interest Profiler activity, which takes activities of interest, personal qualities and favorite school subjects and matches students to groups of careers. This allows students to explore options related to more common careers that they are used to hearing about that may be a better fit for them. In addition, Sophomores learn the importance of GPA, SAT scores, graduation requirements and involvement to create a resume and learn the significance of use this tool, and developing it early as a Sophomore. Freshmen: Freshmen Seminar is a daily 25 minute class, that meets during our school-wide Advisory time. All Freshmen are assigned to a FS teacher: 3 days per week is dedicated study-hall time, Freshmen CANNOT travel UNLESS they are assigned to Reteach lessons on T-R of the week. Teacher will enter 4 graded assignments per year as guided ICAP lessons- designed & trained by school counselors, and implemented by FS teachers. Freshmen learn the transition points of life in high school with Self Advocacy lessons, Strength Explorer interest inventories, graduation requirements, GPA & credits, as well as how the PSAT is used toward college and academic goals.
